Baggage
SAYS YOU: "if I don't have the doctines presented in the D&C and Pearl of Great Price, and all the doctines taught by the Church in mind, I would not be able to “correctly” interpret the scriptures."
 ME: One major stumbling block we encounter while learning and interpreting everything we attempt is what I will call baggage. We generally build on ideas that we have cme to already.
For example, a Marxist who believes the phrase "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need", will see socialism in the Book of Mormon.
Mosiah 4:26 ....I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants.
Mosiah 18:27 And again Alma commanded that the people of the church should impart of their substance, every one according to that which he had; if he have more abundantly he should impart more abundantly; and of him that had but little, but little should be required; and to him that had not should be given.
The point is that if we bring presuppositions our understanding, without utmost care, will be more or less tainted.
Remembeer Dr. Wright, the Pentecostal? He read the Book of Mormon and pointed out Speaking in tongues!
Of course we have,
Omni 1:25 ....and in the ministering of angels, and in the gift of speaking with tongues, and in the gift of interpreting languages....
Alma 9:21 Having...many gifts, the gift of speaking with tongues, and the gift of preaching, and the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the gift of translation;
But not to be overlooked as in,
2 Nephi 31:13....behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.
2 Nephi 31:14 ....received the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost, and can speak with a new tongue, yea, even with the tongue of angels
Alma 19:29. ....and as soon as she touched her hand she arose and stood upon her feet, and cried with a loud voice, saying: O blessed Jesus, who has saved me from an awful hell! O blessed God, have mercy on this people!
30. And when she had said this, she clasped her hands, being filled with joy, speaking many words which were not understood
Nephi 11:3 And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.
3 Nephi 17:15 And when he had said these words, he himself also knelt upon the earth; and behold he prayed unto the Father, and the things which he prayed cannot be written,
3 Nephi 19:32 And tongue cannot speak the words which he prayed, neither can be written by man the words which he prayed.
34 Nevertheless, so great and marvelous were the words which he prayed that they cannot be written, neither can they be uttered by man.
Again, the point is that we must be careful what we bring to our studies. We can miss things or see things on the pages that just aren't there.
We discussed in the past how my scholarship as a member sometimes almost ruins my enjoymet in the scriptures. I still,after all these years, compare and contrast what I am reading with my past ideas. I wish I could get over that.
SAYS YOU: "I would not be able to “correctly” interpret the scriptures."
 ME: The amazing thing about the Book of Mormon is that there is little to interpret. The Book of Mormon Prophets had a goal to present the concepts as easy as easy can be.
1 Nephi 13:35 For, behold, saith the Lamb: I will manifest myself unto thy seed, that they shall write many things which I shall minister unto them, which shall be plain and precious
2 Nephi 25:7 But behold, I proceed with mine own prophecy, according to my plainness; in the which I know that no man can err;
2 Nephi 25:28 And now behold, my people, ye are a stiffnecked people; wherefore, I have spoken plainly unto you, that ye cannot misunderstand.
2 Nephi 31:2 Wherefore, the things which I have written sufficeth me, save it be a few words which I must speak concerning the doctrine of Christ; wherefore, I shall speak unto you plainly, according to the plainness of my prophesying.
3 For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.
2 Nephi 32:7 ....they will not search knowledge, nor understand great knowledge, when it is given unto them in plainness, even as plain as word can be.
Jacob 4:13 ....these things are manifested unto us plainly, for the salvation of our souls.
2 Nephi 32:4 Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark.
That should be enough.
Our apprach should be, "what does this really say"?
