Conflicting Testimonies

As I stated in my "teaser" above, there was a group of people who believe that God told them something, there would be no Christ.
Alma 31:16 Holy God....Thou hast made it known unto us that there shall be no Christ.
Alma and Amulek came teaching that they knew there would be a Christ.
Alma 34:8 And now, behold, I will testify unto you of myself that these things are true. Behold, I say unto you, that I do know that Christ shall come among the children of men, to take upon him the transgressions of his people, and that he shall atone for the sins of the world; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
So, do we just conclude that there is nothing that can be done but say "Well, you live by your revelation and I will live by mine" or is there something else?
Let's see what the Book of Mormon teaches. I take the following from Alma 31-4.
There are two questions that must be identified:
Alma 34:5 And we have beheld that the great question which is in your minds is whether the word be in the Son of God, or whether there shall be no Christ.
Although this is regarding the Son of God, the question can be about anything. The point here is to nail down a specific question. The second question is key to solving the conflict:
Alma 33
12. And now Alma said unto them: Do ye believe those scriptures which have been written by them of old?
13. Behold, if ye do, ye must believe what Zenos said; for, behold he said....
14. Now behold, my brethren, I would ask if ye have read the scriptures? If ye have, how can ye disbelieve.....?
And there it is. The answer to conflict is revelations, inspirations, burnings in bosoms, visions, etc, is to resort to the scriptures. Indeed, the Book of Mormon and Bible were provided to "confound" false doctrine and, by extention, confirm true doctrine.
2 Nephi 3:12 Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write [Book of Mormon]; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write [Bible]; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins [Book of Mormon], and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah [Bible], shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions....
We now see
Alma 32:1 And it came to pass that they did go forth, and began to preach the word of God unto the people, entering into their synagogues, and into their houses; yea, and even they did preach the word in their streets.
Amulek summerizes this approach:
Alma 34:7 My brother has called upon the words of Zenos, that redemption cometh through the Son of God, and also upon the words of Zenock; and also he has appealed unto Moses, to prove that these things are true.
Here is Alma doing what Amulek points out. Alma 33
12. And now Alma said unto them: Do ye believe those scriptures which have been written by them of old?
13. Behold, if ye do, ye must believe what Zenos said; for, behold he said: Thou hast turned away thy judgments because of thy Son.
14. Now behold, my brethren, I would ask if ye have read the scriptures? If ye have, how can ye disbelieve on the Son of God?
15. For it is not written that Zenos alone spake of these things, but Zenock also spake of these things--
Look, those mixed up people had great esteem for their "inspired" leader, Zorum. Thats why he could "lead their hearts".
Alma 31:1 ...Zoram, who was their leader, was leading the hearts of the people...
It is that esteem that lead them into errors contrary to that which was written. Paul warned us against this:
1 Corinthians 4:6 ....learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.
These people were taught about Christ before Zorom got a hold of their hearts with his revelations:
Alma 34:2 My brethren, I think that it is impossible that ye should be ignorant of the things which have been spoken concerning the coming of Christ, who is taught by us to be the Son of God; yea, I know that these things were taught unto you bountifully before your dissension from among us.
How was Zorom able to lead them astray?
Alma 31
9. But they had fallen into great errors, for they would not observe to keep the commandments of God, and his statutes, according to the law of Moses.
10. Neither would they observe the performances of the church, to continue in prayer and supplication to God daily, that they might not enter into temptation.
11. Yea, in fine, they did pervert the ways of the Lord in very many instances;
Because they let important things slip, they were susceptable to charalatans who taught error, even stuff contrary to what they had been taught in abundance.
Alma 33:20. But few understood the meaning of those things, and this because of the hardness of their hearts. But there were many who were so hardened that they would not look, therefore they perished.
One of the most important things we shoul "look" at is the bible and Book of Mormon. See the bereans:
Acts 17:10. And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
The Breans looked. Those at Thessalonica didn't. And what was the result?
Acts 17:12. Therefore many of them [Bereans] believed;
What of the Thessalonicans? Paul had to warn them against the
9. ....working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10. And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Holy mohly! So the Zoromites had pleasure in unrighteousness, for they didn't keep the commandments. This left them open to strong delusions. They let a man claim revelation and to lead their hearts into error. Zorom went "beyond what was written"!
