Actually, the concept is in contradiction to the Book of Mormon. Lets look and see. The following citations are from 2 Nephi 2 and are in italice.

The father of lies approaches Eve in the Garden and tempts her with

"Partake of the forbidden fruit, and ye shall not die, but ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil".

So, God gives them the opportunity to become like gods.

God controls the elements. Adam was given the earth to till. (verse 19)

God creates life. Adam was given power to bring forth children. (verse 20)

God acts according to eternal law. Adam was given commandments. (verse 21)

God is free. God gave adam agency. (verse 27)

In fact, "all things are given them which are expedient unto man" to try out being as god. (verse 27)

As man was set off to work his desire to be god, Father gave a whole bunch of helps. He embedded in his heart the knowledge of good and evil, He gave him a will, he gave him scriptures, he gave him the light of Christ and He went about enticing him to do good.

Almost at the very start, man's attempt to be god turned into a field of blood. Things go from bad to worse.

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

In fact, even with all the help from a loving Heavenly Father, mankind remains fallen.

Mosiah 16:3 For they are carnal and devilish, and the devil has power over them; yea, even that old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall; which was the cause of all mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the devil.

To redeem mankind from this mess, He impliments a plan of redemption. All that is required to be rescued is to feel one's sins (repentance), humble themselves to the point where they rely totally of the help of a redeemer (faith and justification) and publicly declare(baptism) their determination to serve God until death. They get the Holy Ghost to guide them (inspiration), give them power to overcome the canal nature (sanctification). They arrive at the rescued state (saved, redeemed) when they begin this journey. They are saved. They are unspotted of the world. They have learned that they will never become gods, that the concept is from the father of lies.

Mosiah 27:31 Yea, every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess before him. Yea, even at the last day, when all men shall stand to be judged of him, then shall they confess that he is God; then shall they confess, who live without God in the world, that the judgment of an everlasting punishment is just upon them; and they shall quake, and tremble, and shrink beneath the glance of his all-searching eye.

Then shall they confess that HE, HE, HE, HE, HE is God. He will not declare that they are gods. All will bow and confess that HEAVENLY FATHER IS GOD.
